Coach Parson’s Pathway Reminder

State League teams are made up of some of the most skilled and most talented kids available in each Club’s catchment zones.

Generally these players progress through the ranks of the juniors teams as star players and often will be included in many pathway programs such as state teams and WABL All Star Sections.

From a coach’s perspective, athletes who make an elite program like the Hawks SBL teams, it becomes less about individual talent and more about adaptability, being able to change from being the star junior to just one of the team.

To truly understand the principles, coaches put in place to expedite their system, to work together with different demographics of people who all have different life paths, ambitions and in almost all cases different experience levels.

One characteristic however will stand the test of time each and every single time. We coaches look for it, we encourage it, we absolutely love it and we understand not everyone possesses it. It’s the difference from being the star junior to being one who has the determination and willingness to sacrifice for their own induvial accolades and “Buy” into the program. It’s the one who never stops trying to reach their goals no matter the circumstances.

The characteristic is “Grit”

Its perseverance and passion for long-term goals. While their skillset or ability is still critically important, these individuals also have persistence of motive and effort. Their passion and commitment towards the long-term objective either as an individual or within the teams structure is the overriding factor that provides the stamina required to “stay the course” amid challenges and set-backs.
