Megan returns to the Hawksnest

The Perry Lakes Hawks are excited to welcome back  power forward Megan McKay. McKay who stands 192cm tall, has just returned from a successful stint playing for Saint Mary’s College in the USA. McKay has had a decorated junior career representing Western Australia several times and being selected as a member of the West Coast Waves development squad.  Megan was also a member of the Australian Under 17 FIBA Oceania Women’s championship team in 2013 and won a gold medal whilst representing the UniRoos in the World University Games in 2017 . We asked Megan to reflect on her her college career and her future goals.

How old were you when you started playing basketball?

I started playing basketball when I was 8 years old in Katanning.

What year did you get your first SBL contract?

I had my first SBL contract when I was in year 11, so in 2013.

College – tell us when you first had the thoughts of heading to the USA to College

When I was 14 I received some interest from American colleges after playing state under 16s. However, I didn’t really think I could actually head to america and play until I was 16 (during year 11). It was in this year that the Saint Mary’s College assistant coach came all the way to Cockburn to watch me play an SBL game.

What steps did you have to take to fulfil this dream

Playing SBL and State basketball assisted my development as a player. Also being selected to attend Basketball Australia camps continued that growth and love for basketball. The commitment from my parents was fundamental. They would drive me from Katanning to Bunbury twice a week to play WABL. Then throughout high school they continued to come to Perth for state training’s on the weekend.

Tell us about College – where/how long/Degree/basketball

I graduated from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga California, I did four years for SMC and completed my degree in Business Marketing. Playing basketball in the West Coast Conference was a great experience. I was very lucky to have lots of Australians around me while I was over there. I played against fellow Hawk Mia Satie and high school friend Tayla Hepburn (Warwick Senators). It is so amazing that I had the opportunity to play against them on the other side of the world.

Next step in your basketball life….

My next basketball step is to hopefully sign a contract with a German team and to start their pre-season in September.
