About the Perry Lakes Hawks Basketball Association (PLHBA)

The Perry Lakes Hawks Basketball Association is dedicated to the promotion of basketball to people of all ages.

Involvement at all levels of basketball is the essential ethos of our club. We are involved in the NBL1 West, West Australian Basketball League (WABL), Friday/Saturday Domestic Junior Competition, School Competitions, Holiday Camps and Junior Development.

These events are attended by a very wide and diverse section of the community.  The coordination of the above competitions is considerable and we are privileged that volunteers donate much of their personal time and energy into the promotion, organisation and fundraising required for our club to operate.

NBL1 West

NBL1 West is our elite basketball competition in WA. In 2021 the State Basketball League (SBL) became a National Competition branded as NBL1 West.  Teams travel widely throughout the metropolitan area including Willetton, Cockburn, Warwick, Joondalup, Belmont, Rockingham and Morley.  Their fixtures also extend to the country areas including Kalgoorlie, Eaton, Geraldton and Mandurah. The winner of the NBL1 West conference go on to play the winners of the other conferences around Australia for the title of National Champion.

Our NBL1 West women’s and men’s teams have been very successful at the highest level of state basketball over a number of years.

Our Men’s coach up until 2008, the late John Gardiner, coached over 400 games with the Perry Lakes Hawks.  John was an NBL and Olympic player and has for many years dedicated his time to developing our juniors through their pathways.

PLHBA have had many players go on to achieve higher levels of basketball. CJ Bruton has played for NBL clubs and the Boomers, Matt Burston – a previous vice captain of Wildcats and Australian Squad member, Ben Purser and Ben Dixon – have both been development players with the Perth Wildcats Melissa Sinfield and Kim Malajczuk who played for Perth Lynx .

Western Australian Basketball League (WABL)

Our WABL competition extends from May through to September.  Teams travel extensively throughout the metropolitan areas – Willetton, Cockburn, Warwick, Joondalup, Belmont, Midland and Morley.  They also play at country venues including Bunbury and Mandurah.

We field teams from 12 years to U20 players, including Division 1 open teams.

Our commitment is to develop junior players and give them a pathway to play basketball at the highest possible level. Feeder clubs to the Perry Lakes Hawks include Claremont/Cottesloe, Subiaco, City Beach, Scarborough, Raiders and  Warriors.

Junior Competitions

Junior competitions are held on Friday evening & Saturdays beginning in March and extending until September.  Each Friday/Saturday over 370 teams compete between 4pm and 9pm (Fri) and Saturday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. All eight courts are used at each timeslot.
