Celebrating Our Volunteers – The Heart of the Hawks
As we celebrate Volunteer Week, we want to take a moment to recognise and thank the incredible people who help make the Hawks community what it is.
Behind every game day, training session, road trip, team selection, uniform handout, and player experience are volunteers who generously give their time, energy, and passion to support our club. Quite simply, we could not do it without them.
This week, we would like to highlight just a few of the many amazing people who continue to go above and beyond for our Hawks family.
Claire Sweeney & Nezka Wenham
Claire and Nezka have been long-standing team managers across multiple years and age groups, always stepping up wherever needed. Whether it’s organising WABL singlets, sorting managers bags, coordinating JDL uniforms, helping in the shop, or simply lending a hand whenever asked, their willingness to help never goes unnoticed.
Their reliability, positivity, and commitment behind the scenes help keep so much of our program running smoothly, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they do.
Brian Lawrie
Brian has generously volunteered his time and basketball knowledge to support our coaches and player pathway programs.
From assisting with coach allocations for trials, helping with team selections, and being a sounding board for basketball-related questions and development, Brian has become a valued mentor and support for many within our program.
His experience, calm approach, and willingness to help others continue to strengthen the Hawks pathway.
Rick Morcom
A true Hawks club stalwart, Rick has played a significant role in the history of our club and was part of multiple SBL Championship-winning programs throughout his career.
Now, he continues to give back in multiple ways — coaching our U14 Championship Girls team, who have qualified for the Club Championships this September, while also volunteering his time commentating at our NBL1 Women’s home games.
Rick’s passion for the Hawks, commitment to developing young athletes, and ongoing involvement across all levels of the club make him a deeply respected and valued member of our basketball community.
Sharon “Mamma Shaz” Spinner
If there’s one person who truly bleeds blue and white, it’s Mamma Shaz.
Always smiling and always willing to help, Sharon has become a much-loved part of our Hawks family. From supporting players and staff to feeding and looking after our imports and ensuring people feel welcomed and cared for, her generosity and warmth have made a lasting impact on so many.
The love and care she shows our club every single week embodies what community sport is all about.
Thank You to Every Volunteer
While we have highlighted just a few incredible people above, this week is about recognising all of our volunteers.
To every coach, assistant coach, team manager, parent, statistician, scorer, referee, committee member, shop helper, photographer, game day volunteer, and supporter who puts their hand up to help — thank you.
No contribution is too small, and every hour given helps create opportunities and experiences for our players and families.
We are incredibly grateful for the community that surrounds our club, and we warmly welcome anyone who would like to get involved — whether it’s helping every week or just lending a hand occasionally.
The Hawks are stronger because of people like you.
Thank you for everything you do.
