The Gaye Mayger Charity Shield

Saturday’s Women’s and Men’s games are about more than just competition — they are also played for the Gaye Mayger Charity Shield.

Gaye dedicated many years of service behind the scenes at the former Joondalup Basketball Stadium. While she was never one to seek the spotlight, her commitment, passion, and contribution to basketball made her a highly valued member of the basketball community.

In 1997, Gaye was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout her courageous battle, she continued to work whenever she was well enough, showing the resilience, determination, and strength that so many remember her for.

Following Gaye’s passing, her family wanted to honour her memory in a meaningful and lasting way. With her nephew, Trent Mayger, having proudly represented both the Wanneroo Wolves and the Perry Lakes Hawks, the Gaye Mayger Charity Shield was established as a tribute to both her life and her connection to the two clubs.

First contested in 2002, the Gaye Mayger Charity Shield has grown into a special and long-standing tradition between the Wolves and the Hawks. The Shield is awarded to the club with the highest combined aggregate score across both the Women’s and Men’s games, meaning every point scored throughout the night contributes to the final result.

Saturday marks the 24th edition of the Charity Shield. Across the previous 23 contests, the Perry Lakes Hawks currently hold a 13–10 advantage, and will be looking to extend their winning streak to four consecutive years.

The Perry Lakes Hawks are proud to continue being part of this special tradition and sincerely thank the Mayger family for allowing both clubs to honour Gaye’s legacy each year through an event that celebrates not only competition, but community, resilience, and remembrance.
